French TV show by Claude Barma (1918-1992) in 4 episodes (sometimes split in 13 episodes, total length about 4h30), filmed in black & white (Claude Barma has also directed Le Chevalier de Maison-Rouge).

First aired on ORTF from saturday 13th march 1965 to saturday 27th march 1965.

Château de Médan
(coordinates 48.953974,1.994628) 		The Château de Médan, in Les Yvelines, built during the  XVth century was used as the mansion of the evil Boris Williams.

C'est le Château de Médan, dans les Yvelines, construit au XVe siècle qui a servi pour la demeure du diabolique Boris Williams.

À l'origine une structure du IXè siècle. Cette structure a servi de base à la construction d'un pavillon de chasse à la fin du XVè siècle, puis convertie plus tard en château. Pendant la Renaissance, le château est fréquenté par Ronsard et les poètes de la Pléiade.
Au XIXè siècle, Émile Zola habite à côté et son ami Paul Cézanne vient peindre le château en deux tableaux impressionnistes appelés Le Château de Médan. En 1924, Maurice Maeterlinck, Prix Nobel de littérature, vient y habiter. Il y écrit La Vie des Termites, L'Araignée de verre et y fait jouer L'Oiseau bleu. Le château est abandonné après la guerre, puis endommagé par un incendie en 1956.
Le quotidien Combat s'y installe jusqu'à sa faillite en 1977. Le château est vendu aux enchères publiques en 1977. Il est acheté par ses propriétairtes actuels, qui le restaurent, et il est aujourd'hui habité.

Belphégor en DVD

In 2001, TF1 vidéo produced a 2 DVD boxed-set containing the four episodes of the series.
The compression is fine, two episodes per DVD, and it is a beautiful object.
It includes one bonus, which explains the story of the series, including major spoiler, so make sure you watch the series first.
There is only French audio (mono), and unfortunately no subtitle track, DVD-9, zone 2.

Belphégor, the original novel

The series has been created based by a novel by Arthur Bernède. This novel is still available (see the DVD section for suggestion of online stores).

The author (Jean-Christophe Roger) has tried to preserve the spirit of the original series, the producer (Mireille Roulé) and the artist (Frédéric Bezian) claim they aim for 7-14 year old kids, their parents and the fans of the original series, whatever their ages.
The action takes place in present day Paris in the vicinity of the Louvre. Belphégor animated has been produced by Les Armateurs who are also known as the producers of Kirikou et la Sorcière, and co-produced by France 2 and France 3. The artist and directeur artistique Frédéric Bezian is a Belphégor fan and an illustrator already known for his comic book Chien rouge et Chien noir (edited by PMG).

Francois Chaumette Né en 1923 à Paris, il fréquenta le lycée Buffon, le Conservatoire national d'Art dramatique (classes de René Alexandre et André Brunot). En 1942 il fit une brève apparition dans Les Visiteurs du soir de Marcel Carné, puis se consacra durant de nombreuses années au théatre. En 1943 il créa Sodome et Gomorrhe puis interpréta entre autres Huis clos de Sartre. Pensionnaire de la Comédie française à partir de 1957, il en devint sociétaire de 1960 à 1987, puis sociétaire honoraire. Il revint au cinéma en 1952 avec Le Chemin de Damaset Rayé des vivants. Il y déploie une activité intense entre 1957 et 1959, avec une dizaine de rôles dont le plus célèbre fut celui de l'infâme Philippe de Gonzague dans Le Bossu d'André Hunebelle. La télévison française fait appel à lui à la fin des années 50. On le voit dans la série Les énigmes de l'Histoire, qui devient La caméra explore le temps, où il est notamment Cromwell (Procès et mort de Charles Ier) et le cardinal Saint-Ange (Les Cathares). Diverses émissions dramatiques: La Marquise d'O (1959), Les Perses (1961) de Jean Prat, La Nuit des rois (1962) de Claude Barma et les feuilletons de ce dernier le font connaître du grand public: Le Chevalier de Maison-Rouge (où il incarne Dixmer, époux jaloux et royaliste fanatique), Belphégor, D'Artagnan (où pour une fois il incarne un rôle sympatique, celui d'Athos). Il est mort en 1996. Il était marié à Paloma Matta.

François Chaumette interprétait Williams dans la série ; le rôle complexe d'un personnage proche de Belphégor, si proche que d'une certaine façon, le commentaire de Camille Labarre n'est pas complètement faux, mais il faut vraisemblablement avoir vue la série en entier et attentivement pour donner du sens à ces commentaires.

Belphégor, the movie

In 2001, the Belphégor series was converted into a movie, with Sophie Marceau and Michel Serrault, and even Juliette Gréco in a small role. There where many common elements into the main plots that refer to the old series, as well as many new original elements created for the movie.
I myself did not enjoyed the movie as well as I had whish, althought it was a great pleasure to see again a fantastic adventure in the Louvre.
